In the United Kingdom, vehicles are categorized into different MOT classes to ensure that the correct checks are performed during MOT tests. These classes help garages and test centers apply the appropriate inspections based on the type and characteristics of the vehicle. Here are the main MOT classes:

  1. Class 1: This category includes small motorbikes with engine capacities up to 200 cc or motorbikes with sidecars up to 200 cc. Essentially, it covers low-power motorbikes for one or two riders.

  2. Class 2: Encompasses all motorbikes (with or without sidecars) that have engine capacities over 200 cc. These higher-power motorbikes tend to be larger and have more components to handle the increased engine output.

  3. Class 3: Reserved for unique three-wheeled vehicles weighing up to 450 kg.

  4. Class 4: The most common category, it includes a wide range of road vehicles:

    • Cars (with up to eight passenger seats)
    • 3-wheeled vehicles over 450 kg
    • Motor caravans (also known as campers, RVs, or motorhomes)
    • Service vehicles like ambulances and taxis
    • Private passenger vehicles (up to 12 passenger seats)
    • Goods and services vehicles with a gross weight of up to 3,000 kg
  5. Class 5: Covers more sophisticated vehicles on a larger scale:

    • Private passenger vehicles and ambulances (13-16 passenger seats)
    • Private passenger vehicles and ambulances (over 16 passenger seats)
    • Playbuses
    • Coaches
    • Class 4 vehicles with 9-12 passenger seats and Class 5 vehicles with over 13 passenger seats that also require a seatbelt check fall into Class 4a or Class 5a, respectively.
  6. Class 7: Pertains to goods and services vehicles with a gross weight between 3,001 kg and 3,500 kg.
